"Oh Victoria, what'll I do?" Emmaline asked, tears coming to her eyes, "My parents only let me come here because they knew Nicolas would protect me. And now he's gone and left."
Nicolas walked at the head of the group, creating a path for the others.

Victoria: "I don't know, Emmaline... I don't even know what to do myself, with all my family either dead or leaving," I jestered toward the woods, "I'm all alone for the first time."

William: I walked over to the only man that didn't seem to be conversing with anyone at the moment. "Hi," I said, "Aren't you Nicolas, I think we're neighbors." I held out a hand to him.

Emmaline nodded, she understood how Victoria felt. With her parents back in Ireland and her fiancee leaving for parts unknown, she was alone, as well.
Nicolas nodded and shook William's hand with his own strong, calloused one. "And you're William, Victoria's brother, correct? My bride-to-be, Emmaline, talks of her often."

Victoria: Suddenly, a thought came to my mind, "Um, this may be a tad audacious, but, do you want to live with me? We're both alone, it's not right for two ladies of our age to be alone."

William: "Yes, you'd be correct. Victoria adores Emmaline. Oh, I'm being rude, this is my wife, Julia."
"Hello, Nicolas." She curtsied a little.

Emmaline smiled, a bit embarrassed. "I was about to ask you the same query," she said, "And you're quite right. It simply won't do for two young ladies, such as ourselves, to be alone."
Nicolas bowed slightly. "A pleasure to meet you, madame," he said to Julia.

Victoria: I reapeated the statement with a smile. "'Simply won't do', I pulled on one of the lace trimmed sleeve of my dress. "Which cabin do you want to live in? Mine or yours?"

William: "Yes, a pleasure it is," said Julia. I took Julia by the hand again and we walked on beside Nicolas. I decided not to bring up family. Though, I knew if our acquaintance continued, talk of family was inevitable.

"Either will be fine," Emmaline replied, smiling a little herself. She felt lucky to have such a good friend as Victoria. Without her, she would probably be stumbling after Nicolas, trying to bring him back with silly excuses such as 'You forgot your gloves'.
Nicolas walked on through the forest beside William and Julia. He began to think that he perhaps should have married Emmaline. Then she would have little choice but to be by his side now. Why did we put it off? he thought with a twinge of regret.

Victoria: "How is your garden, mine's doing terrible. That is a good factor to play in when choosing our place to live."

William: Nicolas seemed like a thoughtful man. I guess at that moment I was too. I decided to break the silence. "You and Emmaline aren't married yet?" In my mind I added, "Will you ever be?"

Emmaline considered. "Fairly well. The vegetables aren't too large yet, but at least they're trying to grow."
Nicolas shook his head sadly. "She wanted to wait until we got here."

William: "Oh." I looked at Julia. I was glad that she and I had gotten married in England. Now we were together.
