That night Dayna zipped on her black fire-proof suit with the usual resolve- to win. Her car hardly made a sound as she drove towards the track, a harsh smile on her face.

Connor : I drum my fingers on the steering wheel, my heart pounding in my ears. This is it. This is for Avery. I just have to pull second. I catch Dayna's eye. I nod respectfully before spotting Elliot and Lucy. I put on a grin and wave to them. Elliot whistles with his fingers while Lucy just grins back. We tinkered a little more with Blaze last night. She was purring. I test the gas. She growls. I grin wider. This was going to be easy. My dad comes up to my window. I lower the window and look up at him.
"Newbie Clarkson has some tricks up his sleeve. He crushes his opponents. Literally. His tires lift him up while he drives and he drops down. Adrenaline junkie," he snorts. I simply nod. I'd seen Clarkson. He was 18 and a hyper little thing, maybe 5'6'', 5'7''. I think he just plays too many video games. This ain't a game, I think coolly, this is life and death at our finger tips. And i was gonna live. I had to.

At the sound of the announcer's voice, the cars pulled up to the starting lines and gunned their engines.
Dayna slipped on her headset so that she could talk to her crew, and turned on some classical music to chill her nerves.
She nodded back at Connor, as her engine mumbled eagerly.

Connor: I instantly hear Elliot's voice in my ear. I wince when it crackles loudly. "Speak softer Ell," I snap, flipping down my shades. It was a bit of a cheat, but it's not like other riders didn't cheat worse. I can tell Clarkson has an accelerator by the way his thumb twitches over his automatic shift. I'm sure there's a little red button that just shoots him off. But going fast means acting stupid. reckless. Uncontrollable. My hands tighten their grip on the steering wheel.
"You got this man!" Elliot shouts again.
"Turn the headset off or give it to Lucy!" I shout, anger and frustration flaring up in me. I close my eyes and let out a deep breath. I have to calm down.
"Ready....Set...." there's gunfire and I hit the gas. My tires squeal for precisely 2.4 seconds - just like Luce and i tested - before I shoot out of the gates and for the course. Rocks start rolling down the side of the mountain as I slip past Clarkson and get right behind Dayna.

The gun fires loudly and suddenly... nothing exists but the race. Dayna reclines in her seat, calmly shifting gears when her car whines for it. Her face is expressionless, her mind three steps ahead.
A glance at her rear-veiw mirror displays Conor's presence and a quick look to her left shows a shortcut. It's a dangerous move this early in the race, but Dayna trusts her gut and swerves out of the way before slamming on brakes and pulling into thw mouth of the shortcut.

Connor: I glance in my sideview mirror. I watch as Clarkson swerves in front of the car that was just pulling in front of him. The light blue car screeches as it tries to get away from Clarkson's navy blue one. But the driver miscalculates and is sent over to the edge. I have to turn away as the explosion from the impact flares up beside me. I want to kill that kid. He still thinks this is just a game. I can see it in his face. I set my own in a grim one, taking a risk and pulling sharply in front of him. I ignore the death glare. He knows exactly what i'm saying to him. And he wants to kill me just as bad. But before he can even make a move, i change the gears automatically to drift at the next turn, avoiding the steep incline that most drivers miss and end up 30 ft above my head and slipping down and losing control. Me? I learned drifting when I turned 16. I stay on the level road, pulling into fourth place. And Clarkson's nowhere in sight...Where the hell did he--

Lucy: I tear the headset from Elliot's head. "You heard him. Get in positions!" I yelled at all the men, they knew I was a girl and they put up with it. I slipped on the headset and rolled my neck, I was the only female engineer here. I can see the men laugh at me, I just give them an innocent smile and wink at them. "Crush them like bugs Conner. Show 'em what my baby can do. Hit the red button at the last lap for extra speed. Luck." I informed him quietly. The head set was very sensitive. I knew that Conner would win, he was going to win even if I had to get on the race track myself and drag him to the finish line. I put an innocent look of fear on my face for the other engineers, zipping my jumper down a bit to distract them. I went to my garage and got in position.

Connor: I grind my teeth. "I'm gonna win this fair and square, Luce," I say sternly back. Clarkson's gaining up on me to my left again. "and besides, this is just qualification. I have the rest of the races to show everyone what she's got." I half smile grimly to myself while pulling my shift to 2 and weaving up to spot number two.

Lucy: I began to pace. I ran through the morning check up before the race. Checking off everything that we did and what we used. "Careful Conner. You can make it. Push it!" I encouraged. I waved at the other garages smugly as they watch me. They don't know what hit them. I slowly bent over to retrieve a screw driver. I grinned.
