When Emmaline found Ashlyn, she was crying. "What's the matter, Ashlyn?" Unfortunately, sympathetic words without sympathy, just don't have the same effect.

"Nothing," Ashlyn lied, turning away. This is really weird, she thought, Why am I actually feeling bad about trying to get lunch?
Emmaline walked up to Ashlyn, unsure of how to provide comfort. She awkwardly placed a hand on Ashlyn's shoulder, as she had seen others do. Suddenly, it was as if a surge of energy was going up Emmaline's arm to her heart.

Emmaline recognised it as pure, unbridled Emotion; a mix of Sadness and Regret. She desperately tried to get rid of it before anything happened. It came bursting out her fingertips and straight at two trees.

The two trees absorbed the Emotion. They began to sag, a little sadly. Things like this had never happened before. Emmaline felt slightly hollow inside. It felt like something was gnawing at her insides; Fear. Other trees and plants were beginning to bend toward her, protectively.

Emmaline shook her head, taking deep breaths. Eventually, she subdued the fear and got rid of it all together. The trees and plants went back to their original places. All except for the trees that had absorbed the Emotion. Emmaline noted calmly that something like that had never happened before. Had a mind, body, and soul deprived of Emotion been forced to resort to taking others' Emotions?

"Yes," Emmaline replied, her voice void of Emotion, "Just a little lapse in concentration." She noticed that Ashlyn had perked up; as if she were no longer sad...

Violet: "Why so robotic?" I asked, my voice was only like that when I was all serious... Actually that was most of the time... I laughed at myself.

"Well, I can't have Emotions," Emmaline explained, "Otherwise... things will happen." She watched Violet chuckle at herself. I wish I could do that once in a while, she thought. She stopped the thought before it could cause any Emotion.

Violet: "Long story..." I said, my voice turning cold. My eyes kept on flashing... I got up quickly and put shadows around my hands so they set back to purple. "Basically I lose control and go on a killing spree." I looked at her.

Emmaline nodded. It would be preferable if Violet kept control. Most people would prefer not to be the victim of a Shadow Thief. She thought of some of the things that had happened when she'd failed, most of them when she was young. The nursery school had burned down over a stolen toy, a falling piece of debris gave the thief a broken leg. In her mind's eye, she saw her neglectful parents. The people she had hated. She them falling to their deaths in an elevator. She remembered the smle that had crossed her lips.

Violet: I snapped my fingers infront of her, and whistled, "Mind making the weather not go loopy?" I asked, watching it go sunny to rain and back again... The sun blinded me a bit.

Emmaline thought of the other Emotionals she had heard of. Most of the world's major earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, etc. were caused by them. Along with a few other things, such as the Hiroshima disaster. The pure power of Emotion was daunting.

Violet: The wind turned cold, damn she had no idea how to control it all... I sat up and smiled her, my fangs poking out a bit, "Y'know... Controlling emotions isn't that hard." I looked at her.

"I'm really sorry," she said. There was actually Emotion in her voice. She'd been surpressing Emotion since she was five, she had no idea why it was so hard now, a decade later. The wind suddenly turned into a warm breeze.

Violet: "Hey, some people are more involved with it all than others, but you seem like completely linked to it... That's a first for me." I pointed out, trying to cheer her up a bit, but at least the wind went back to a normal tepid spring breeze.
